History of Ajapeu Lodge 351

The Order of the Arrow came to Vermont on August 21,1946. It was held at Camp Zack Woods 1, a Long Trail Council Camp, and was called Wisie Hal’a Con #351.

The Long Trail Council included the 9 Northern counties in Vermont.

In 1948 Lodge Number 398 ( Memphremagog ) was organized by the original Green Mountain Council, with office Rutland VT. The Council included Bennington, Rutland and Addison Counties.

In 1926 Windham- Windsor Council # 747 was organized to cover those 2 counties. On January 1, 1936 Windham - Windsor Council Changed it’s name to Calvin Coolidge Council in honor of President Coolidge who was from Plymouth VT. The Lodge associated with Calvin Coolidge Council was # 493. The first name assigned to Lodge # 493 was "Kola "on May 29, 1953. Kola did not last long and shortly thereafter was Called Nicaweeggee .

E. Urner Goodman and Carrol A. Edson (Both with homes in Vt.) brought their Ordeal induction team up from Treasure Island to Camp Plymouth, for the expressed purpose off inducting the then present membership of the "Camp Plymouth Honor Campers Society" into the Order of the Arrow.

In 1956 the Memphremagog and the Nicaweeggee Merged to form the Nianque Lodge # 398 under the new Ethan Allen Council of Rutland. Finally in October of 1972 when the State of Vermont became one Council , The Wisie Hal’a Con # 351 and Nianque # 398 Lodges merged to form the Ajapeu Lodge # 351, under the present Green Mt. Council.

The lodge supports two Council camps, Mt. Norris in Eden Vt. and Camp Sunrise in Orwell Vt. Mt. Norris is used for Boy Scout Camping, while Cub Scout Camping is at Camp Sunrise. Camp Sunrise is also used for Training and the Lodge uses the camp for its Vigil Honor Ceremonies.
