The basic FDF values
In a changing society the basic FDF values need to be clear to everyone. Both for our own sake, so we agree on what we cannot abandon and on the foundation beneath our work. But also so we may explain to others: parents, the press and others who we are and what we want to achieve.
The basic FDF values have always been based on the Christian view of human beings. This means that we believe the world was created by God and that we are his partners. This requires respect of his Creation and other human beings. This means declining the strong individualism of today, where the weak become the losers. But it also tells us that God is the power who never lets life perish. All work within FDF therefore builds upon the basic values outlined below:

1 The Christian view of human beings
We believe that human beings need a point of departure from where they can navigate through life, and we have no doubt that Christianity is THE Point of Departure. Christianity places us in a relationship to other human beings and the world in which we live. FDF is to meet children and youths with the Gospel about Our Lord Jesus Christ and at the same point towards the Danish National Church as the place of worship where FDF belongs.

2 Games, play and imagination
We believe that the qualities we need in order to play are important qualities in our human lives. Qualities such as courage, self-confidence, creativity, responsibility, curiosity, respect, joy and spontaneity. To the FDF methods of working play and imagination should be the hallmark.

3 Member of a fellowship
We believe that the personality of a human being is best developed via interaction with other people. In FDF the individual has great value and we should encourage the best in all children - across ages and capabilities. In FDF children, youths and adults belong to the same fellowship.

4 Responsibility for the world in which we live Shared commitment
We believe that our society needs human beings who are willing to take responsibility, socially and economically. In our working material and ways of social life FDF is to build upon responsibility.

5 Perseverance and robustness
We believe the world needs human beings who are persevering and who stick to the task till it has been completed and that children and youths need to be robust in a fast changing world. FDF is to nourish the robustness and perseverance of children and youths through games, play and responsibility, so they experience the pleasure of persevering and also learn that hardships can be overcome.

6 Visions and dreams
We believe that the prerequisite for being able to influence your own life and possibilities of moving this world is that you are able to dream and have visions. FDF is to kindle the hope that the world is movable.

7 Self-dependence
We believe that human beings develop self-dependence through co-responsibility and co-influence. In FDF children and youths are to have the opportunity to consider matters, enjoy co-responsibility, voice their opinions and be parties to democratic processes.

8 Useful skills
We believe that the personalities of children and youths are also built up through a number of useful skills which are of benefit to themselves as well as others. Via a simple lifestyle during camps and outings and through our activities FDF is to give the children useful skills. Within FDF children and youths are to sense that there are things which they are good at and that their skills are useful.

The ideals of an FDF leader
The basic FDF values are an expression of the values and attitudes upon which we base the FDF work. Once that has been established, one needs to ask: Which qualities should the FDF leaders possess in order to put the basic values into practice? What qualifications must the leaders have?
In answering those questions we do at the same time draw the image of the ideal leader. That ideal should contribute to moving us as leaders , move us in the right direction. The ideal of a leader always underlies our leader training:

• The leader acknowledges the FDF objectives
• The leader serves as a model for children and youths
• The leader is conscious of his/her responsibility and makes heavy demands of him-/herself
• The leader is confident with the basic FDF values and applies them as a guide to his/her leadership
• The leader has a good mind to promoting the Gospel
• The leader is a good companion
• The leader understands the value of play, games and imagination to the FDF work
• The leader improves his/her competence through leader training plus through his/her own experience and that of others.
